On the 10th of July, 1943, 15 minutes after paratroopers from the U.S. 505th Parachute Combat
Team descended apon Scicily's southern coast, U.S. Soldiers waded ashore in what was then the
largest amphibious assualt in modern history. "Operation Husky", the invasion of Scicilty had
begun. This would be the first major invasion of three that would eventually penetrate deep into
"Fortress Europe".
In the fighting ahead many lives will be lost in a campaighn that today is largely forgotten by
the general populace. Children learn of great battles such as Normandy and the Buldge, but not
of equally important battles of Anzio and Cassino. This scenario is dedicated to all those who
fought in the Italian campaighn. It is hoped that through this scenario which I have put so much
work into, that it will create a better understanding of those who fought in this area and the
hardships that they encounterd.

At 5.15pm on September 3rd an armistice between the Allies and Italian forces is signed. The
Armistice is announced by Badoglio on the 8th to the overjoyed Italian people who had been
under Facism's iron rule for more than twenty years.
Germany, unwilling to let their one time Allies get off the hook that easy, respond to this
change in events with immediate, devastating, and unique brutality. Entire divisions of Italian
troops serving alongside with Germans are taken prisoner and thrown into camps resembling
those intended for mass killing. In the Balkans alone 29 divisions were surprized by a Blitzkrieg
of fierce German attack and were disarmed. Two Italian divisions (the Acqui and the Bergamo)
put up a stiff and noteworthy defence but were besieged into surrender. The Germans
massacred those who could not escape into the hills after they capitulated.
On September 9th a small convoy of Italian warships on their way to surrender at Malta are
ferociously attacked by the Luftwaffe. The Flagship "Roma" is sunk by a direct hit with the loss
of 1,500 lives including the Captain.

Due to the failure of the Anzio landings to immediatly capture Rome, some of the fiercest
fighting of the war was waged as the 5th Army struggled to take Monte Cassino from a tenacious
German Army.
The French Expiditionary Force under General Juin was ordered to attempt to go around
Cassino via Monte Belvedere and Colle Abate in an attempt to cut off the Germans. It fails
allthough through their valiant actions they do manage to tie down 2/3rds of the defenders.
Kesselring had good notions to feel uneasy whenever the French Expiditionary Force was thrown
against his army.
Clark was bogged down at this moment on the Cassino bank of the Rapido river, belived by
General Freyberg due to German observationists located at the historic abbey of Monte Cassino.
Allthough General Clark did not think that this was entirely true, 229 Allied bombers dropped
453 tons of high explosive on the venerable building and completely destroyed it. This only
provoced the Germans to take up positions in the rubble ideal for a defensive war and it took
another wave of 775 bombers dropping 1,250 tons of bombs on the town to disloge them!

surprize in store, he throws the crack 16th Panzer Division into the fray.
A few days later the German Panzergrenadier Division and the German 10th Army under

Patton displaying his tactiful genious managed to take the city with only 1 Division while 2
